Home Sweet Home Based Business, or Not?

The benefits of working at home are very attractive, especially to the recent college graduates who are looking for jobs. Working from home has now become a major trend among job seekers. Based on statistics, one-third of the households in the U.S. include independent workers—in other words, people who work at home.

A few years ago, most online entrepreneurs started their own businesses because they could no longer think of working for others anymore or didn’t want to spend several hours commuting every day just to get to the office and back home again. Since then, many have succeeded with their ambitions and gained freedom through being self-employed. However, not everyone is lucky enough to do so; some are stuck in jobs which give too little, and others have to work in a location so far from home that they still have to commute for several hours.

Although working at home has many benefits, it is not appropriate for everyone. The income earned may be inconsistent every month; there is no security provided by the employer; and worst of all, there is nobody watching out for your interests. If you think that you belong to any of these categories below, then chances are you shouldn’t work at home.

– You need extra time with family members:

If your children need attention because they’re too young or you need more time to take care of elderly parents who live with you, never choose a job which allows working from home. Not only would this make the life of those around you difficult, your income would be unstable as well.

– You need a higher degree or an MBA:

Many successful business owners now started their careers with high school diplomas and found success in years. However, many of those who worked hard and ended up getting college degrees (and even MBAs) aren’t doing much better than those who don’t have such credentials. Many employers still believe that the higher the level of education, the greater chance employees will perform brilliantly. But let’s face it; not everyone can be brilliant at work regardless of how much they study. If you know yourself well (that is to say, if you’ve got a poor memory or are terrible with numbers), then it might not be worth taking the job just because of the degree you will eventually get.

Importance of passion in work

– You need to be around people physically:

Some jobs require you to be around others very often; for example, sales representatives or teachers. If this is so effective for your work performance, then working at home might not be suitable for you. There’s also an opinion that it takes time to adjust after starting working from home, which could result in some tardiness if one is used to being surrounded by co-workers all the time. Another downside is that there aren’t many opportunities for socializing with other employees who are doing the same job as you are, and this can make some people feel isolated over time—a problem which can be very stressful in the long term.

– You need a certain level of physical comfort:

If you have a bad back or just don’t want to sit at home all day, then this kind of work is not for you. After several hours spent sitting in front of a computer, most people get tired and can even develop neck pain from time to time. What would you do if your neighbor suddenly became ill because he had been sedentary during the weekend? Would you call up your co-worker and ask her to give him a ride to the hospital? Again, if an office job isn’t a problem for your health, then there’s no point going through all that trouble with working from home.

– You’re prone to distractions:

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, is said to wear the same clothing every day so as not to be distracted by deciding what to wear. That’s because if you’re easily distracted by everything going on around you—including noises from the street and even your own pets—then working from home might not be a good idea for you. However, there are many successful home-based business owners who love their work and aren’t bothered by anything except their income fluctuating from time to time. It all depends on the level of distraction you can tolerate and how important it is for you to keep a steady income each month.
